Information for Runners

Entry:

The race is limited to an entry of 300 runners this year. These numbers will improve in the 2010 event. Entries will not be accepted without a signed completed Entry Form and disclaimer. A detachable entry form is attached to this information sheet. The closing date for the entries is Friday 20th November 2009.

Registration, and Race Numbers:

Registration shall be made at designated points countrywide. After registration, participants shall collect the Runners Race Numbers at appointed Centers not necessarily the same as the Registration Points. Note that your race number confirms you have entered the MAASAI MARA MARATHON and is your ACCREDITATION MARK and is also your IDENTITIFICATION. Do not lose it and do not let anybody else use it. Without the Race Number properly attached to your running vest, you will not be allowed to run. Race Numbers are categorized and colored coded. An explanation will be provided at the Registration Point.

Race Categories & Entry fees:

Half Marathon (21KM) – Open to male and female Local and other individual runners . Entry fees is Kshs. 500.00 for individuals.

5 KM Race – Open to male and female Local, Other individual runners and Corporate Teams. Entry fees is Kshs. 500.00 for individuals and Kshs. 20,000.00 for a Corporate Team. (A minimum of 5 runners per Corporate Team)

5KM Fun Run: Open to male and female individual fun runners and celebrities. Entry fees is Kshs. 500.00 per individual runner.

Route Map:

The Courses have been measured and designed by the Technical Team and are attached to this information sheet. Distances in kilometers on the route shall be displayed to all the participants to see.

The 5Km Race:
Starts at the 5Km point at Wuanga Plains at the foot of Wuanga Hills and runs anticlockwise to the finish at the Fairmont Mara Safari Club Sports Field.

The Half Marathon (21Km) Race:
The Half Marathon (21Km) race start at the Sports field outside the Fairmont Mara Safari Club, turning left at the junction of the club entrance and the airstrip road and runs on the dirt road through Olchorro Oirowua Plains for a distance of approximately 4km then makes a right turn on the direction of Aitong shopping Centre and runs for approximately 1 Km then turns right at the 5Km mark  running through Wuanga plains and making a left turn just after a narrow path separating Wuanga from Koluo/Ngerende Plains and back to Aitong road for approximately 1Km before, again  turning into the Koluo Plains and running straight down the vast Ngerende Plains.  Distance of approximately 8km is covered on the Ngerende Plains turning to the right at the last Manyatta on the plains to Ngerende Assemblies of God Church and Primary School complex and another right turn after entering the Airstrip Road and running on the road which is opposite the Mara River past the Ngerende Island Lodge for approximately 4Km to the finish at the Fairmont Mara Safari Club Sports Field.

Participants shall be at the starting lines at least 15 minutes before their assembly time having duly the registration process.

Note: Rangers, security personnel and officials shall be at their positions along the courses at 6.30 am and the courses shall be closed for any movement from 7.00 am

Security along the course:
Armed rangers will be placed at a distance of approximately 50 meters from each other within the vicinity of each other. In addition, volunteers who will include youth, community members and Maasai morans in red clothing, will be placed in between the rangers to completely keep/flash away even the harmless wildlife. There will also be other armed rangers/personnel with vehicles on patrol along the course at all times. At the back of the last runner(s), there will be a vehicle and medical support team to keep an eye on those runners.

Water and Sponge Stations:
Water Stations for the Half Marathon will be located approximately every 5km and at the Finish. These will be about 11 stations. Water will be supplied in 300ml bottles with the tops off.
NOTE: TAKE WATER WHENEVER YOU GET THE CHANCE

Sponge stations will be located at appropriate points at every 5km from the 12.5km point.
Please discard your bottles and sponges to the side of the course –dropping them on the course might be hazard­ous to runners behind you.

Elite Runners Water Station

Some Elite Runners will have their own drinks. These will be placed on a table BEFORE the general water tables with a sign that says Special Drinks. Unless you have a drink at this table, please don’t approach.

Medical Stations on Route:
There are a number of Medical Stations on Route. These will be clearly identified for the runners to see.

Public Toilets:
Portable Toilets will be available within the Start & Finish area and at various points along the route preferably, near the Medical Stations. They will be clearly identified (signposted).

Slow Runners:
A Stragglers bus will follow the back runners in all the races. A 2 hour limit will be placed on the Half Marathon. This is compulsory and will not be negotiable due to security reasons. All those barred must enter the Stragglers bus.

Dropping Out:
If you are unable to continue the race at any point, you MUST move over to the ranger or volunteer who will be placed on the side of the course and wait for an ambu­lance or the Stragglers Bus. You might also wish to stop at a Medical Station, a Sponge Station or a Water Station. Each of these points will have a Manager and you should inform them of your race number and wait for the Stragglers Bus to return you to the finish. You must not at any time be alone or attempt to find a short cut to the finishing point. Any attempt to do the contrary, will be at your own risk. If you require medical assistance, the Manager or a responsible official will inform an ambulance attendant who will collect you and if re­quired, take you to a Marathon Medical Station

Podium Presentation:
The Podium Presentation to Prize Winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.) for all the races takes place inside the Start and Finish area immediately after the last event expected to be about 1.00p.m.

Left Luggage:
Left luggage tent is at the rear area of the Participants Assembly area. Left luggage area is divided into three centers clearly marked your race category. To enter any left luggage centre you must show your Race Number to the attendant Security Guard. Luggage will be stored in bags provided by the organizer. Place your personal items in this bag and take into a counter in the centre. The attendant will write your Race Number and attach it to the bag as well as place a duplicate of your num­ber inside the bag. When you collect your Left Luggage you must again show your race number to the security guard.
